Brief
The world of work has changed. In today’s workplace, people are seeking inspiring spaces that make them want to come to work. Businesses are becoming accustomed to the role design plays in their success, people expect and demand more from their workplaces.
The self-set brief was to design a contemporary piece of furniture for the Danish company Bolia.com in collaboration with Steelcase for the workplace sector taking a sustainable approach.
Design
With a sustainable ethos, Melede was designed to explore a culture change and reflect Scandinavian influence within the workplace. Melede blends Scandinavian simplicity, with both traditional, organic timber alongside new sustainable materials creating a natural and light aesthetic.
The design of the physical space, whether it’s the living room in your home or the enclave in your office, is crucial to fostering this sense of comfort and well-being. Melede endeavours to create a more relaxing, homelier workplace whilst still offering practicality. It supports emotional and cognitive well-being giving people the place to concentrate without distraction or the chance to rejuvenate.

Process
Research began through an extensive investigation into Bolia’s current product portfolio uncovering a strong relationship between design elements, nature and sustainability. Often seen in contrast between abstract and natural shapes, as well as hard and soft surfaces and materials. Alternative material investigation also took place. Radical Matter highlighted opportunities.
Design development followed three directions; planters, square coffee tables and rectangular tables. 1:10 models helped to generate quick ideas which were then further developed into 1:5 scale.
The decision was made to use a waste plastic board as the surface in combination with sustainable felt. The square coffee table was chosen to develop due to its more efficient sustainable manufacturing.
